The story is based in the year 2026 in California. A a nuclear bomb explodes there and despairs all the city but mysteriously an automated house isn't damage. This house that had very advanced technology was working as if it was a normal day. The alarms for waking up the people sounded, the breakfast was ready, and some robotic animals started to clean the house.
A very important element for Sci-fi is the technology, and is a element that is used in this story. So the house that was left in the explosion of California´s nuclear bomb was automated. The house made everything for the owners like: the breakfast, the house weak them up, and some robots cleaned the house. "At eight thirty the eggs were shriveled and the toast was like stone." This element shows relevance because is showing us how technology could be in 11 years. And is showing us how is going to be used in a bad and in a good way.
The setting was also a good and a interesting element that used the story. The setting is in California were nuclear bomb exploded. All the city was in flames and destroyed but there was that only house was working as if it was a normal day. The setting is important because is describing something very rare, a very enormous nuclear bomb that destroyed a city.
One of the techniques most used in the story is the third person. "In the kitchenette breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two glasses of milk." This is an example of third person in the story. Is effective because is narrating and explaining all of the events very well.
The other type of narrative technique that is no very common in the story is the first person. This narrative technique is not common in the story because is a city that was ruined by a bomb. So there wasn't people in that city. But there are some mysteriously voices that say for example: "Today is August 4,2026","Rain,rain, go away; rubbers, raincoats for today..." This are examples that were heard somewhere in the house.
This story is a very clear example of Sci-fi, it uses the technology, setting, futuristic things, and others. All of these elements and techniques are very well used in the story, so it makes it a very interesting story. It makes you think in the future world, how is going to be the technology in those years. How is the society going to be, many other things. For me the theme of the story is concecuences, loneliness, future. Because is showing how the people is going to use the technology, in a bad or a good way. I liked very much the book because it makes you think in many things of the life.
